Dear Carmichael Parents,
By now some of you have started tackling your re-enrollment
packets and have read Gary Bowman’s letter regarding next year’s calendar and
the early release days. I would like to take this opportunity to communicate to
you further how these days will be utilized. We recognize that this will affect
our families, so I also want to inform you what plans we have in place to
support you on these early release days.
First, the reasons for developing these early days are
important for you to understand. For the last 14 years, our teachers have
stayed late for staff and curriculum level meetings, which also cuts into their
classroom and lesson preparation time. School districts have weekly minimum
days to accommodate these meetings. CMP did not wish to have that great of an
impact on our families, and therefore went with two days a month (Sept through
In October and March, the months for Parent/Teacher
Conferences, only one additional early release day is scheduled, which we have
had on our calendars for several years for teachers to work on progress and
report cards. That leaves seven months with 2 early days each. This time will
be used to cover a short staff meeting, mentor reporting, and professional
development or curriculum team collaboration.
Professional development is very important for teachers so
they are better prepared to serve their students. The leadership team, with the
input of the teachers, has created a list of topics to cover throughout the
year. Collaboration among teachers is also considered one of the most
worthwhile activities for educators. At CMP that is particularly valuable,
since we strive to have consistency and to develop best practices in all the
schools and at each curriculum/grade level.
Although these additional days will reduce instructional
time, CMP has always, and will continue to provide, significantly more
instructional minutes than what is required by the state of California. The
teachers will structure their lessons and student work time to adjust to the 2
On early days, the Tk/Kindergarteners will be released at
11:45, the Lower Elementary at 12:00, and Upper Elementary and Middle School at
12:15, which is fifteen minutes later than this year. The leadership team and
Club Montessori Network Coordinators are currently working on the 2015-16 Club
M contract to best serve our families on the early release days, including a
new program that covers the hours normally in class.
I will be holding a Principal’s Café on Thursday, February
19th after drop-off time where I will be available to answer your
questions regarding the calendar or any other topics you wish to discuss. If
you are unable to attend next week, please attend our next Campus Advisory
Meeting (CAC) on Thursday evening, March 5th. Of course, you can
always communicate with me via email or phone.
Thank you for your continued trust in us as we strive to
provide a quality program to your children!
My Best Wishes,
